Student Engagement at The Trout Gallery

We are YOUR campus art museum.  Take advantage of cultural life at Dickinson by joining a public tour, attending our spring student Gala, reserving a custom-art-evening for your club or group, studying in The Gallery during finals, attending our openings (free food) and other special events.

The Trout Gallery also offers opportunities for students from all disciplines to become involved with museum life.  Students may choose from a variety of opportunities based on their personal interests, career goals, and available time commitment during a given semester. From the intensive Curatorial Internship, to the informal Trout Fan, all Dickinson students now have the opportunity to live creatively at Dickinson.

Applicants for paid positions must have already completed one year at Dickinson.  NEW: Student Assistant positions are eligible for the Internship Notation Program (INP).  See your Academic Advisory to determine if a Trout Gallery exprience meets your department's internship requirements.

Academic year 2020-2021  paid positions have already been filled.

APPLICATIONS ARE DUE FEBRUARY 25TH FOR THE FOLLOWING POSITIONS:

MUSEUM INTERPRETATION ASSISTANT

Assists with school-age education programs, delivers gallery interpretive programs to the general public, develops education materials, and staffs special events. Art history, history, studio art, cultural studies or education background desirable. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Must have availability an average of two Saturdays per month.

4-6 hrs/week. Four Assistants needed per semester, with option to renew for second semester.

EXHIBITIONS AND COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT

Assists the Collections Manager with preparing and installing exhibitions, supporting object study programs and cataloging the collections. Previous experience with art installation, construction or painting is desirable.

4-6 hrs/week on average. Schedule changes based on museum installation schedule. One- year commitment required.

EDUCATION MANAGEMENT ASSISTANT

Assists the Eeducation Department with daily operations.  Areas of work include: managing Education paperwork, reservations, staffing, spaces, events, programs and interpretation materials.  Responsible for organizing and maintaiining supplies and equipment in the Mumper Stuart Education Ceenter.  Archives education materials.  Applicants should possess great attention to detail, be reliable, organized, and comfortable with learning new computer applications.  Previous management experience is desireable.

10hrs/week. One-year commitment preferred.

COMMUNICATIONS AND EVENTS ASSISTANT

Assists the Communication and Events Coordinator with daily operations. Areas of work include: events, marketing, design, social media, web-blasts, mailing lists, print materials, and website. Ability to learn web-based marketing applications and computer database management systems is necessary. Excellent written and verbal communications skills are necessary. Familiarity with graphic design software, Mail Chimp, and Excel is desirable. Previous experience with public speaking or social media marketing is desirable.

10 hrs/week. One-year commitment preferred.

TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANT

Develop and provide technical support for museum technologies. Examples include The Trout Gallery App, related Audio Tours, social media platforms, and museum scheduling and database software. Good computer skills, and a background in computer programming are important. Familiarity with Java, Wordpress, OA Plus.

4-6 hrs/week. One-year commitment preferred.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE ASSISTANTS

Seeking Spanish, French, German, Italian, Arabic and Japanese Assistants. Fluency in more than one language is desirable. Language Assistants are trained in museum exhibition content and lead language programs for college classes using objects on view in current exhibitions. Lessons are collaboratively planned and edited by language assistants, relevant faculty and Trout Gallery staff.

Hours vary weekly. Approximately 4-6 hrs/week during four planning weeks and 1-2 hrs/week the rest of the semester.
